Ethiopian Songs Friday, Aug 31 2007

Dawn Eden tells us:  Searching for videos online, I discovered the stunning singer Mirtinesh, who looks like a supermodel in nun’s clothing and sings like an angel.

You don’t need to know Amharic, the Ethiopian language, to appreciate the devotion of the Tewahedo songs. This Mirtinesh video, like a number of the Tewahedo songs I found, nearly brought me to tears.

Just checking blogs today and found this to add to the cultural sea we swim in…

Another thought on the previous post:  A World Where Kids Count:

What if we could actually see the guardian angel standing on duty behind each little child — a huge warrior, the kind of powerful presence that, in numerous Bible incidents, triggered instant panic in strong adults? If just one of these angels revealed himself at our nearby schoolyard or neighborhood park, we would begin treating the little ones with a new found awe and respect. Gone would be our world’s pathetic pattern of child abuse, cruelty, and even neglect. The globe and its priorities would be turned upside down. Imagine…

Think on it… a world where the utterly powerless suddenly gain immense power simply because we discovered they were not as powerless as we suspected… and by far out-weighed the biggest perpetrator you can imagine. That would change the shape of things in our world, would it not?

Angel says: I have seen some of your paintings of angels. Not very accurate. Why do some of your artists try to make us look like lovely, soft women or cute, chubby babies? Let’s correct that idea right now. When you think of an angel, don’t think of soft clouds or little cupid-like cherubs decorating packages of bathroom tissue. Angels are terrible warriors. We are the army of the Living God, His heavenly host — a mighty, terrible host, surrounded with the blinding glory of the Almighty’s holiness. Our strength is incomprehensible to you humans. Why one night while the Assyrian army was surrounding Jerusalem, one of our host went through their camp and put to death 185,000 of their soldiers (2 Kings 19:35). Cute, chubby cherubs, ha! Every time a human actually sees one of us, he collapses in terror. That’s why we always have to start our conversations with: “Fear not!”

Supermen! Friday, Aug 17 2007

What would it be like in a world where kids count?

What if the men of the world consciously viewed themselves as God-appointed guardians of children? What if every culture said to its men, “It’s part of your job in life, as strong, tall adults, to make sure children are safe from hunger, deprivation, and all kinds of abuse.” This would mean sticking with families instead of abandoning them. It would mean providing for financial, emotional, and spiritual needs. Women rarely ditch their children, no matter how severe the circumstances. What if men saw it as part of their manhood to match or even exceed this commitment?

Can you even imagine a world like this…? Instead of men preying upon children and women worrying themselves to death every night when they go to bed on how they can more completely protect their children from the predators out there? In a world like this we could count on our own husbands and fathers to protect and provide and be a good example… and we could also depend on policemen and teachers and scout leaders and priests… and military men… even enemy military men…and complete strangers out there on the street to watch out for our children’s best interests and not let any harm come to them…

What a world… What a change… Could it happen? What a challenge!
